The "Columbus cross flag" is the ensign of the Columbus expeditionary banner, also known as "La Capitana". It was a white flag with a green Crusader cross, and each of the two green, crowned initials—"F" and "Y"—standing for King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, were adorned with golden crowns. This was the flag flown by Columbus and his captains on their ships during the 1492 voyage.
Design: A white flag featuring a prominent green cross.
Initials: At the center of the cross were two green initials, 'F' and 'Y'.
Crowns: Both initials were crowned with golden, open royal crowns.
Symbolism: The "F" stood for Fernando (Ferdinand) and the "Y" for Ysabel (Isabella), the Spanish monarchs who sponsored the voyage.
Usage: This was a captain's ensign, flown by all of Columbus's ships to distinguish them. It was used to claim the first land in the Americas on October 12, 1492.
