Choose One or Choose Both (one will be free with any purchase): The War Between the States, a brutal period in our history; the conflict was the costliest and deadliest war ever fought on American soil, with some 620,000 of 2.4 million soldiers killed, millions more injured and much of the South left in ruin.
For the First Confederate Historical Flag - Adoption March 4, 1861 - There were three bars on the flag, two red and one white, and thus the popular name "Stars and Bars." The seven stars represent the seven original states: South Carolina; Mississippi; Florida; Alabama; Georgia; Louisiana and Texas.
The USA 34-Star flag was adopted with the admission of Kansas as the 34th state in January 1861. It was used until 1863 when West Virginia became a state and a 35th star was added. This 34-star "medallion variant" is a replica of some antique home-made flags. US flag making was a cottage industry during this time period and flags had differing star patterns until 1912 when Executive Order 1556 (President Taft) arranged stars into rows.
We chose a 34-star laid out in a medallion pattern; including a large star in middle; a popular pattern during the 1860's-1870's. The linear 34-star layout was most popular but there are some medallion "cottage-industry" flag layouts remaining.
The similarity of the design of the Confederate flag and the Union “Stars and Stripes” made it difficult to distinguish between the two in the heat of battle, most notably during the First Battle of Bull Run (known to Confederates as First Manassas). This resulted in troops firing on their own men—or “friendly fire”—and in the capture of a number of prisoners of war.
